Why do we need E-FS?

FAT just doesn't cut it anymore. Files can be no larger than 4GB, allocation is slow, and finding files is very expensive computationally. With the demands of modern devices, battery life is important and such computational waste is not acceptable. Further more, FAT is prone to errors, and suffers from quirks introduced by constant upgrading of old technology.

Its time for a fresh start!

Microsoft have recently released their exFAT filesystem. Unfortunately they won't release the specifications without an expensive and restrictive license. That means that any company that wishes to support exFAT must cough-up the money.

The embedded market should be the driving force behind the next generation of portable file-systems, as only we can address the needs of our devices.

My dissertation on modern file-systems design will be available at the end of 2010. (After it has been submitted and released from the University). Until then I can only release small portions of the specification on e-fs.org.uk.
